PGT for SSB, GTO Tasks
PGT for SSB, GTO Tasks

Introduction

This training booklet is designed to guide SSB aspirants through the four most critical GTO practical tasks: PGT, HGT, Command Task, and Individual Obstacles. Drawing on real-world experience from my tenure as a GTO and Psychologist, this guide offers practical strategies, examples, and mindset shifts required to perform effectively during the SSB.

1. Progressive Group Task (PGT)

Objective: Team-based task using props (planks, ropes, loads) to cross sequential obstacles.

Assessment Criteria:

  • Team cooperation

  • Logical thinking

  • Rule consciousness

  • Leadership

Rules to Remember:

  • Color Code: White (usable), Red (out of bounds), Blue (neutral)

  • Start & Finish Line: Must follow structure

  • Load: Must be carried, not thrown or dragged

Performance Tips:

  • Understand rules before starting

  • Contribute ideas even if not implemented

  • Balance between leading and supporting

  • Use materials with care and innovation

Pro Tip: Sometimes the solution lies in basic physics—leverage, counterbalance, and anchor points.

2. Half Group Task (HGT)

Objective: A simplified PGT with fewer group members for individual visibility

Assessment Criteria:

  • Initiative

  • Logic under reduced pressure

  • Ability to cooperate in a small team

Performance Tips:

  • Be active in suggesting and executing ideas

  • Listen attentively to group members

  • Maintain clarity and composure

Pro Tip: Look for simple, efficient solutions—don't over-engineer.

3. Command Task

Objective: Individual leadership task involving solving an obstacle with 2 subordinates

Assessment Criteria:

  • Command presence

  • Situation assessment

  • Instruction clarity

  • Confidence under pressure

Performance Tips:

  • Greet the GTO and listen carefully to instructions

  • Call subordinates respectfully and clearly

  • Brief them on the task before starting

  • Use logic, maintain safety, follow rules

  • Involve subordinates—don’t micromanage

Pro Tip: Difficult tasks are often given to strong candidates. Take it as a compliment, not pressure.

4. Individual Obstacles (IO)

Objective: Complete 10 physical obstacles in 3 minutes, each with assigned points

Assessment Criteria:

  • Physical courage

  • Stamina

  • Risk-taking attitude

  • Motivation and persistence

Examples of Obstacles:

  • Burma Bridge

  • Rope Climbing

  • Double Jump

  • Balance Beam

  • Tiger Leap

Performance Tips:

  • Attempt easier obstacles first (1-6), then move to complex

  • If stuck, move on and return later

  • Don’t fear failure; trying earns points

Pro Tip: Determination counts more than total score. Attempting the same obstacle multiple times shows spirit.

Final Thoughts from Lt Col Dheeresh Tripathi (Retd)

In GTO tasks, you're not being tested on how much you know, but on how you think, lead, and respond to dynamic situations. Remember:

“It’s not the strength of your arms but the balance of your mind and the nobility of your spirit that we look for.”

Your clarity, adaptability, team orientation, and resolve are your real assets. Prepare to think, to act, and to lead.
